(AUG 29) I have been observing the world of
women’s boxing for quite a while now. The sport has changed, and it has changed
for the good—that is an absolute fact.
I have known many of you female boxers literally for years and years---some of
you I know personally; and some I have simply covered closely as you progressed
through the ranks.
Thankfully, today, you are finally reaping the financial benefits and
recognition that were built entirely on the backs of trailblazers and pioneers
who came before you.
And, even as you have jumped leaps and bounds to become highly successful and
highly paid, there is one critical message I want to share with you all: Don’t
lose who you are in the sport.
Don’t sell your soul.
You are exactly where you are today because of your elite talent as an athlete.
You do not have to pretend to have grudges, and you do not need cheap antics to
try to drive traffic your way. If you genuinely have a grudge against an
opponent, that is one thing. That is "real," and a genuine rivalry absolutely
brings authentic interest into a fight.
But if a promoter or an advisor is telling you to jump out of character, let me
say this—it is not believable.
When you post these ridiculous videos and step totally out of character, it
makes you look like nothing more than a sellout to your own self. It simply is
not worth it. Stay true to the elite athletes you actually are.
