(OCT 25)
The era of "fast-tracked" illusions in women’s professional
boxing is coming to a close. For years, a persistent
narrative suggested that female fighters could bypass the
amateurs, and the time spent, paying their dues in the
amateurs and simply transition smoothly into the pro ranks.
That honeymoon is over.
One of my
biggest pet peeves I have in the sport is seeing some female
boxer being talked into turning pro without the benefit and
experience in the amateurs.
The result? Fighters with minimal amateur background are thrown
directly into the lions' den,
they will be given some opponents that "they" have no business
being in the ring in the first place....Then after a couple of
lame fights...they are put in this a real opponent and we have
seen that scenario play over and over again....
In today’s sport, it HAS evolved past the point where
a fighter can rely solely on raw athletic talent or heart. The
talent pool is deeper, the champions are more technical, and the
risk of taking a catastrophic beating is higher than ever. When
a manager matches an green prospect against a seasoned,
ring-savvy veteran just to fill a television slot or pad a card,
it isn't "giving them a shot"—it’s gross mismanagement.
The amateur ranks are not an optional prerequisite anymore.
The amateurs is a crucial step for a fighter to learn to manage distance, handle
different styles, deal with adversity, and develop the muscle
memory required to survive ten hard rounds. Skipping this
foundational step doesn't fast-track a career; it truncates it.
If women's boxing is to be respected on the same global scale as
the men's game, the industry must stop treating its athletes
like shortcuts to a quick payday.
Promoters need to build
fighters, managers need to protect them, and the athletes
themselves must realize that in a sport as brutal as boxing, you
cannot fake the foundation. The lions' den doesn't care about
your hype—it only respects your pedigree.
