History on the Line: Miyo Yoshida Chases Three-Division Glory Against Skye Nicolson in Texas
November 3, 2026

(NOV 3) On Sunday night, November 8, 2026, at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas. Defending WBC Super Bantamweight World Champion Skye Nicolson will defend her title against veteran two-division world champion Miyo Yoshida in a highly anticipated ten-round championship bout at MVPW-07, airing live on ESPN.

For the 38-year-old Yoshida, this fight is a gateway to cementing her legacy across a third distinct weight class. For the 31-year-old Nicolson, it is a crucial defense to solidify her reign at 122 pounds after a career rebooted by moving divisions.

Miyo Yoshida’s path to professional boxing completely bypassed the traditional, paved amateur structures. Born in Japan, Yoshida moved to Hawaii at age 20, where she initially trained in mixed martial arts and kickboxing. She didn't lace up boxing gloves until the relatively late age of 26, giving birth to her daughter just a year later.

Returning to combat sports as a single mother without any amateur boxing experience, Yoshida defied the odds to become a decorated professional champion. Her grit earned her Ring Magazine's 2023 Most Inspirational Female Fighter award. After later moving to New York City with her daughter, she became widely revered across the sports world as Japan's "Fighting Single Mother."

Super Flyweight Dominance (2019): Yoshida secured her belt by capturing the vacant WBO Junior-Bantamweight (Super Flyweight) title with a unanimous decision victory over Casey Morton in Chiba, Japan.

The Rematch Success (2021): After a brief setback, she reclaimed her WBO Super Flyweight crown by avenging a loss to Tomoko Okuda, outpointing her rival in a tense rematch.

In 2023, stepping up on short notice in San Francisco, Yoshida stunned the boxing community by completely outclassing fan-favorite Ebanie Bridges via a dominant unanimous decision to capture the IBF Bantamweight World Title.

On Sunday, Yoshida (19-5, 1 KO) aims to add the 122-pound crown to her collection. A victory would make her a three-division world champion, elevating her name further into the historic upper echelon of Japanese female boxing alongside greats like Naoko Fujioka, Etsudo Tada, and Yuko Kuroki.

In stark contrast to Yoshida’s late start, Australia's Skye Nicolson (16-1, 3 KOs) was born into a dedicated boxing family, carrying a profound legacy. Growing up in Queensland, Nicolson was inspired by the memory of her late brother Jamie, an elite amateur boxer who won a bronze medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games and competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Tragically, Jamie and his younger brother Gavin were killed in a car accident in 1995, a year before Skye was born.

Determined to honor her family's name, Nicolson put together a phenomenal amateur career.  She claimed a bronze medal at the 2016 World Championships, won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and represented Australia at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

With two fiercely different journeys converging under the lights in Texas, MVPW-07 promises to deliver a flawless showcase of women's championship boxing.  Nicolson's only loss as a professional boxer was against Tiara Brown, when they fought on March 22, 2025, for the WBC World Featherweight title.  After that fight with Brown, the next fights for Nicolson were in the super bantamweight division where on December 13, 2025, she won the interim WBC Super bantamweight title against Yuliahn Luna Avila.
