IWONA GUZOWSKA HAS BEEN CHOSEN AS WBAN'S
APRIL 2001 FIGHTER OF THE MONTH
Iwona Guzowska, born July 2, 1974, and from Gdansk, Poland, is the WIBO featherweight World Champion
and made a "History
first" when she became Poland's first women's world champion.
Guzowska, who is 5'5", and 125 lbs. She has given
many interviews in some of the most prominent Polish newspapers, TV and
radio stations and is extremely popular in Poland.
One boxing fan commented, "In spite
of Iwona's popularity and notoriety, she is still modest and very
elegant. Iwona is also a loving mother of a seven-year-old son - Wojtek."
Iwona first became a kick-boxer.
After two-month's of training she won the Polish
Championships. She was very successful in kickboxing, and on three
occasions, she mounted the highest step of the podium of World
Championships. She fought 60 times with losing only three matches.
She turned pro in women's boxing on February 13, 1999.

February
13, 1999 Jastrzebie Zdrój, Poland -
Iwona fought Emilia Velizarowa-Jakimowa from Bulgaria in superbantamweight
division. She defeated Emilia with first round TKO.
Iwona's record was 1-0 (1KO).
On
April 17, 1999 in Warsaw, Poland she defeated
former kick-boxing champion of Portugal Vanda Correia,
with a second round TKO. The
style in which Guzowska won the first two fights were so impressive, that
in the third fight she had an opportunity to compete in and win the
professional European Title. Iwona's record moved to 2-0 (2 KO). Correia's
record fell to 3-2.
On
July 17, 1999, in Gdansk, Poland, Iwona defeated Esther
Schouten, of Hoorn, Holland, from the Netherlands with a unanimous
decision. Iwona won by a ten-round unanimous
(97-94, 98-92 and 97-93) in which she won the vacant WIBF European
featherweight title. Iwona's record improved to 3-0 (2KO), remaining
undefeated.
After Iwona's fight with Esther, the press
said that she fought with the skill levels of a man, and Iwona said,
"For me it is the greatest compliment" I want to fight in
such a way. I dont like the way the most women fight. They dont care
about the defense at all. I dont want to have a destroyed face. This is
unworthy of a lady."
On
September 18, 1999, in Gdansk, Poland, Iwona became the
WIBO Featherweight World Champion. The fight that earned her that
title took place in Gdansk. She defeated Valerie Rangeard from
France. Although her victory was overwhelming (100-91, 100-90,
100-89) Iwona was not satisfied. Iwona said, "I showed only 50%
of my abilities. I was very tired of popularity I got last months."
Iwona's record moved to 4-0 (2KO).
On
November 20, 1999, in Gliwice,
Iwona successfully defended her WIBO belt. She won by a 10 round UD over
Cynthia Prouder. (100-90, 99-91, 98-94). Her record is now 5-0 (2KO).
April 8, 2000 - in Poland, Iwona defeated Chris
Kreuz in a 10-round unanimous decision, and retained her
WIBO featherweight title. She also gained the IWBF
Featherweight "World" Unification.

Iwona Guzowska, 126, Poland, won by a
unanimous decision against Leona Brown,
120, 25, USA. Guzowska won on scores of 77-75 twice and 78-74 in a fight where styles clashed badly.
According to news sources, the much shorter Brown rushed in with Guzowska looking to counter but most of the time they just ended up wrestling. Guzowska waited too much and didn´t impress.
