Boxing: Daisy Lang defends her World
Championship title on Saturday The lady who really wanted to be a
leopard Hamburg (dpa). Outside the ring she is personified gentleness,
but inside the ropes she becomes a wild cat. Daisy Lang, Pro boxer
from the Hamburg Universum Stable, defends her World Championship
Title in Junior Bantam Weight for the second time in Duisburg on
Saturday (DSF/22:OO)
Her opponent, Canadian Kathy
Williams, will be her first big "ripeness" test,
according to her trainer Michael Timm.
Her real name is Deisislawa Kirowa and comes
from Sofia. "Deisislawa is the name of a Bulgarian queen. But a
lot of people find it too long" explains the World Champ.
"And as I have very long legs, I was just called Daisy Lang by
the others in the gym" The 27 year old Bulgarian have now found a
new home in Düsseldorf. Her waving blond hair, body clinging leather
outfit, as well as her soft voice and seductive laughter, does not fit
the cliche of a slugging female. "Boxing is not a slug match, it
is art" according to her.
Daisy Lang received the nickname "The
Lady", because the pronounced feminine sides of her nature
outside the ring, leaves a lasting impression. I really wanted to the
name "Leopard". "I like the animals verymuch. I would
like to have their speed, power and explosive power" she says
"But in my soul I am a true Lady". However, in the ring it
is over with politeness and restraint. "I am not there to kiss my
opponent" Her sports career have brought her many titles:
Taekwondo European Champion 1992, European kick boxing champion 1994,
Karate World Champion 1995 and Kick boxing World Champion 1995. The
1.70 Meter (5'7") tall woman turned to por boxing in 1996. She
has won 9 out of 10 pro fights.
Boxing is genuine training for life, for the
physio therapeut, who is studying for her grade at the Cologne Sport
School. "This one-on-one sport can be compared to real life.
Others will help you to prepare for the fight, but in the ring you
will have to solve your problems on your own" Trainer Michael
Timm confirms his protege's extreme will power.
"She has made good progress on the tecnical
side, but we are still not where we want to be. The power potential
must be increased" according to Timm.
Besides the Junior Bantam Weight championship
fight in the Duisubrger Rhein-Ruhr-Halle, there is a further women's
championship fight.
