Tonight in Monterrey
By Ewan Whyte
February 2, 2007

With a nom de guerre like "La Paloma" ("The Dove") – (should we make that nom de plume,  I wonder) –  Jazmín Rivas's opponent on tonight's “La Hora de la Verdad” bill in the Arena Coliseo, Monterrey, clearly has a sense of humour. She may need it, too, because Rivas is planning to make quick work of her.

Since failing (on points) in her bid to wrest the WBC bantamweight title from Kwang Ok Kim on the 21st October 2005, Rivas has fought only twice – plans for her to challenge Alejandra Oliveras for the WBC super bantamweight championship fell through (after the date had been set), allegedly because the Argentinian considered the Mexican teenager too dangerous an opponent for her first fight back after injury – and the frustration is starting to get to her.

At the age of 19, "La Rusita" now has 17 fights behind her as a professional (she started at 13). Of these, she has won 14, including the Mexican bantamweight and WBA super flyweight titles at the ages of 16 and 17 respectively.

La Paloma, for her part, is either 3 and 0, 0 and 1, or 3 and 1, depending upon which report you believe, the confusion deriving, I expect, from dodgy dictation, with "Elizabeth Aguiyon", "Elizabeth Aguiyón" and "Elizabeth Aguillón" being in all probability one and the same. If she really is 0 and 1, though, and her loss was to Perla “Potranquita” Hernández, who has lost 3 times to Eva Lidia Silva, (who lost her last two fights to Rita Figueroa), then I don't think Rivas has much to worry about.

Unless she's allergic to feathers…
