Erika Cruz Hernandez Pulls an Upset over Jelena Mrdjenovich by a Technical Decision

(APR 23) Last night at the United States Military Academy, West Point, in New York, in the mainliner of  a scheduled 10-round WBA World title bout, Mrdjenovich, 125¼, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, going into the fight with a 41-10-2 (19KO), faced Erika Cruz Hernandez (3KO), of Mexico City, Mexico, 12-1-0 (3KO).

But in an upset, the "Southpaw" Cruz won the bout by a a technical decision after the referee stopped the fight in the seventh round due to Mrdjenovich bleeding from an accidental headbutt. Mrdjenovich wanted to continue the fight, but the ref stopped the fight due to the injury.  The fight went up to the judges scorecards that were 70-63, on all cards.

Cruz said after the fight in a post interview, "I told you yesterday, Mexicans are warriors, and I demonstrated that.  Every single round that went by, I thought of my father, and this victory is for both of us. I couldn’t come this far and disappoint him. I didn’t, and now I will bring this title back to him.”

Mrdjenovich would like a rematch.  “Sometimes it doesn’t go your way.  I am going to lick my wounds a little bit and get back to the drawing board. We will see about a rematch. I feel a little cheated tonight," stated Mrdjenovich.

Cruz, winning the WBA Featherweight World title, improved her record to 13-1-0 (3KO), and Mrdjenovich is now 41-11-2 (19KO).
