(MAR 8)   Six of New Zealand’s best amateur women boxers will be heading to the world women's amateur boxing championships in New Delhi, India.

The six boxers will be heading over without the support of Boxing New Zealand due to Boxing NZ boycotting the world-sanctioning body IBA due to IBA being governed in Russia. Boxing NZ did state they would not stop the boxers from heading over to India to compete. Here are six boxers who will be heading over.

Cara Wharerau

Cara Wharerau is one of New Zealand's best boxers. She is a five-time New Zealand amateur national champion, competed in multiple international events including winning the Australian Golden Gloves and has fought in 78 amateur boxing fights. She competed in the 2018 World women's amateur championships which were also held in New Delhi. Trained by Dion McNabney who started Lani Daniels's boxing career. Wharerau is a true contender at the World Championships. She will not only be representing New Zealand but also the Maori people.

Tasman Benny

Tasman Benny is another one of New Zealand's best boxers. With 54 amateur boxing fights to her name, she is a bronze medalist at the commonwealth games and a two-time New Zealand amateur national champion. She has travelled the world competing in international competitions including, Spain, Australia, India, Thailand, Jordan and more. Trained by Cameron Todd. After High School, Benny joined the Nazy. In other sports, she competed in Netball but gave it up to focus on Boxing.

Jen Peters

This will be Jen Peters's first attempt at the World Championships. Also under Cameron Todd, she won her first New Zealand title at the 2022 championships in Wanganui. She will be entering this world championship as an underdog.

Elenoa Lilo

This will be Elenoa Lilo first attempt at the World Championships. Trained by the great Terry Reid-Batchelor who has trained World Champion Geovana Peres and Commonwealth games medalist Troy Garton. Lilo is a two-time New Zealand amateur national champion.

Celine Lee-lo

Recent New Zealand national heavyweight amateur champion, Celine Lee-Lo will be heading to the championships for the first time. Trained by Jeff Elia, who would be coming with her to India. Celine is the youngest member of the team.

Christine Gillespie

The final member of the team, Christine Gillespie will be heading to the championships for the first time. Trained by Barry Galbraith, she is a three-time New Zealand national amateur champion. Gillespie has done amazing work as a boxer in New Zealand.
