(MAR 22) Wellington combat sports fighter Gentiane Lupi will return to the boxing ring to fight for the vacant World Boxing Foundation World Super Lightweight title in Kenya against Sarah Achieng.

Gentiane Lupi is a true combat sports veteran, spanning across Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai and MMA. At 47, she is still active but near her career's end. This could possibly be the last world title fight of her career, also being one of her toughest fights. This will also be the first boxing fight for Lupi since her TKO win in July 2021 against commonwealth games participant Ariane Nicholson.

This opportunity comes at a time when New Zealand boxing is booming with world title opportunities. David Light for the WBO Cruiserweight title in England on the 25th of March, Floyd Masson for the IBO Cruiserweight title in Australia on the 1st of April, Mea Motu for the IBO Super Bantamweight title in New Zealand on the 27th of April and two New Zealanders Lani Daniels and Alrie Meleisea fight for the IBF World Heavyweight title also in New Zealand. Not including the current IBF World Super Bantamweight champion Cherneka Johnson.

In her career, she has accomplished a lot, especially winning two world titles between two sporting codes. In May 2015, Lupi won the Interim WIBA Super Bantamweight title in Wellington New Zealand, which was later promoted to full world champion in September 2015. In July 2017, In Muay Thai/Kickboxing, she won the WKBF World Featherweight title again in Wellington New Zealand.

One of the biggest wins of her career was her two battles against the world's first IBF World Women's Champion, Daniella Smith. Lupi took on Smith in June 2014 in a six-round fight, and in December 2014 in a ten-round fight for the vacant New Zealand title. Lupi won both fights, first by Majority decision and second by TKO stoppage in the fifth round.

Lupi will be taking on Kenya boxer and Commonwealth Boxing Champion, Sarah Achieng. Achieng is a tough boxer who is ranked highly across the board, being ranked 3rd in WBO, 4th in WBA, 6th in IBF, 6th on Boxrec, and 12 in WBC. She is trained by reggae artist Irie Priest.

She is the more experienced boxer with Achieng debuting in 2008 and having fought 17 times in her professional career. Lupi who has had well over 30 fights across combat sports, shes only fought 11 times in professional boxing.

Only two New Zealanders have ever won the World Boxing Foundation title including Soulan Pownceby on June 2010 in Auckland, and Kali Meehan on June 2011 in Queensland, Australia. Multiple legendary boxers have won titles since its creation in 1988 including Roy Jones Jr, Jame Toney, Frans Botha and Lisa Marie Vizaniari.
