Desley Robinson Won the WBA Oceania Middleweight title
by Benjamin Watt

(AUG 24) Australian Desley Robinson has won the WBA Oceania Middleweight title, squeezing through with a narrow split decision against Tongan-born New Zealander Nailini Helu. However, despite the result, in this writer's opinion, Helu was the better boxer between the two.

The two boxers produced a very technical eight rounds of professional boxing, with the winner receiving a massive jump in their career. The fight happened at ABA Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, and was promoted by Bruce Glozier.

The Australian has a massive height and reach advantage over Nailini Helu; however, Desley Robinson's biggest flaw was her lack of movement, which gave Helu a good target.

In the first three rounds of the fight, the two boxers were feeling each other out; however, Robinson was holding Helu off with a jab, but by the end of round three, Helu had her figured out. Helu started outboxing Robinson and snapping her head with a straight right in rounds four and five.

Round six was more of a competitive, even round; however, round seven went straight back to Helu. At one point, Robinson looked like she was going to go down. In the final round, it seemed that Robinson had a talking to in the corner as this was the only round in the entire fight that was a convincing round win for Robinson.

After the fight, IBF World Heavyweight Champion Lani Daniels joined the ring, stating after she defends her world heavyweight title, she will be dropping weight and coming after Desley Robinson. After this win, Desley Robinson has put herself into world title contention against Claressa Shields.

Nailini Helu is now back to the drawing board; however, She has stated she is open to fighting anyone in New Zealand, anywhere between the weights of 66kgs and 76 kgs.
