CHICAGO (APR 21, 2002) Sunshine Fettkether
and Leticia Robinson were supposed to fight at the Hilton Hotel on
April 20---but the fight and the whole card was called off. Fettkether’s
team contacted WBAN and in their own words related to WBAN what occurred. This
is what they said: "Thought you'd like to know. The April 20
fights in Chicago at the Hilton were canceled. After a lot of confusion
about flights and hotel rooms, Sunshine, her trainer and the rest of the
boxers finally settled into their Travelodge hotel rooms (they were told
they were staying at the Hilton).
At 10:00 a.m. everyone showed up at the Hilton for weigh-ins but the
commission was waiting for the bond money before they would proceed. The
bond money never showed so the commission sent the boxer’s back to the
Travelodge.
Sunshine and her trainer went to get something to eat and Frankie
Smith, Leticia's manager, came up to them and said the promoter was going
to go ahead with the female fight and the heavyweight fight and asked
Sunshine to go back to weigh-ins which she did. Leticia weighed in at 159
- contract weight was not more than 150. Sunshine was willing to give up
the weight and go on with the fight. Then the commission found out once
again that there was no money to pay the fighters and the Promoter,
Douglas Pendarvis of Pendarvis Boxing Promotions, was nowhere to be
found, so the fighters were again sent back to the Travelodge.
When they got back to the Travelodge they found out that they did not
have a room. Pendarvis had only paid for one night so Sunshine and the
other fighters had to pay for a room for the night (those who could afford
it). Some didn't have the $90.00 to stay the night and had to go to the
airport and stay there until the next day to catch their flight. Luckily,
the flights were booked as non-refundable round trips, so at least their
flights couldn't be canceled. This is just to serve as a warning to others
who may be considering doing business with Pendarvis Boxing Promotions in
Dorchester, MA." 04/21/02
