(NOV 28) Katie Taylor produced a
master-class of boxing to march into the lightweight final at the
5th AIBA Women's World Championships in Ningbo City, China following
a resounding 20-2 semi final win over two times Russian national
champion Ayzznat Gadzhieva this morning.
It was right hands and left hooks all the way from the 22 year old
Bray woman, who was 6-1 ahead at the end of the first and 13-2 in
front at the end of the second, before adding another seven points
to her total in the third and final round.
Taylor, the reigning World, European and European Union champion,
who is now guaranteed at least silver, will meet Cheng Dong of China
in tomorrows 60Kg final.
Dong beat Cindy Orain of France 6-1 this morning. Taylor beat Orain
11-0 in last Augusts European Union final in Liverpool.
Commentating on this mornings result, Taylor's dad and coach Peter
Taylor said that it was his daughters best performance of the
tournament so far.
Taylor senior also revealed that there were a lot of fairly vocal
Irish fans at the Ningbo Youngor Gymnasium this morning.
He said: "Katie gave a master-class this morning. She was absolutely
outstanding. She's improving with every bout
at these Championships.
"The Russian girl came to box and was attacking all the time but
Katie picked her off superbly with counter punches.
We have one more big test tomorrow and that is our focus now.
"A lot of Irish fans have arrived down from Beijing to cheer Katie
on and they created a terrific atmosphere.The Fields of Athenry got
a great blast this morning."
Today's results means that for the second time in just over three
months an Irish boxer will meet a Chinese opponent in a major
international final in China.
Last August, Irish captain Ken Egan was desperately unlucky to lose
out 11-7 to Xiaoping Zhang of China in the light heavyweight Olympic
final.
The finals of the 5th AIBA Women's World Championships will be held
this Saturday starting at 2pm local time.
Ningbo City is eight hours ahead of Ireland.
Women's senior bouts are contested over three, two minute rounds.
