AIBA 2019 Women's World Championships in Ulan-Ude, Siberia
by Michael O'Neill
October 5, 2019

(OCT 5) Another fine win for Ireland at today's 2019 AIBA Women's World's in Ulan-Ude, Siberia when Cill na Martra's Christina Desmond gained a split decision win over England star Sandy Ryan from Derby.

The Rebel southpaw, whose backhand repeatedly stung the Derby orthodox, won the first round on the unofficial cards, and Ryan, benefiting from a surprise public warning for slapping, claimed the second.

However, Desmond, a former European bronze medallist, put the 'foot on the gas' in the final 30 seconds of a close bout to seal the victory and join Ceire Smith in the last 16.

The final scores read 29-27 and 29-27 to Desmond and 29-27 to Ryan and two 28-28, 28-28 scores but when it went back to the judges that marked it even to select a winner they opted for Desmond.

She’ll now meet Canada’s Myrian Da Silva next Wednesday. The Quebec-native and Pan American finalist is the No. 5 seed in the welter class in Ulan-Ude.

Meanwhile, Belfast feather Michaela Walsh, the No. 5 seed in Ulan-Ude, meets Carmara Fatoumata (Mali) on Saturday.

Amy Broadhurst trades leather with Germany’s Maya Kleinhans on Sunday.

This year's World's is NOT an Olympic qualifier but provides valuable additional experience for all taking part as most of the world's top boxers including Mary Kom are taking part.

Ireland's World Lightweight champion (60kg) Kellie Harrington misses out as she has not recovered from the injury which forced her to withdraw from the European Games final against now favourite in Siberia, Mira Potkonen of Finland. Broadhurst replaces Harrington for Team Ireland.

In total, there are 224 athletes from 57 countries participating. Ten days of competitions will define 10 best women athletes in the world of 2019 edition.

The President of Russian Federation Mr Vladimir Putin made an address to all the boxing community claiming that «women’s boxing has a long and eventful history, but only at the beginning of this century it received official recognition and Olympic status». He also underlined that he is sure «that the eleventh AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships would be a huge success, as it is proving to be..

AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship took place took place in FSK-Arena in Ulan Ude, but day 1saw no sensations, but couple unexpected and exciting results.

Top-seeded light flyweight boxer Hyang Mi Kim (PRK) meets with Risa Nakata of Japan, who took the first RSC in a second-round bout against Lethabo Modukanele (BOT). Despite the first sustainable win Japan boxer will have a tough challenge against Kim who is the bronze medalist of the last edition of these Championships.

WBAN will update events in the coming week and anyone wishing to see the action will find LIVE STREAMING from BOTH rings on the AIBA 'YouTube' Channel.
