Three New Zealand Female Boxers named for commonwealth games
by Benjamin Watt

(JUNE 25) The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games is just around the corner with the opening ceremony happening on the 28th of July. The 72 countries are expected to participate this year, for them, it's almost as big as the Olympics, especially for boxers where the Olympics may not host Boxing anymore. Here are the three women that were announced to represent New Zealand in Boxing at this year's commonwealth games.

Erin Walsh - Featherweight

Born in Ireland, and residing in Auckland New Zealand, Erin Walsh has become an official Kiwi (Nickname for New Zealander) On June 16th this year. With this new achievement, she now has the right to represent New Zealand in World competitions including the Commonwealth games.

Walsh fights out of Peach Boxing with head coaches the New Zealand boxing power couple Isaac and Alina Peach. The gym produces a lot of success with boxers including WBO International Cruiserweight Champion and Commonwealth Games silver medalist David Light, WBO Global and IBF Pan Pacific Middleweight Champion Andrei Mikhailovich, undefeated up-and-comer Jerome Pampellone and four-division New Zealand National Champion Mea Motu.

Walsh has earned her own success in her own right by winning the 2021 and 2022 North Island Golden Gloves and the 2021 New Zealand National Amateur Championships. Since June 2021 Walsh has remained undefeated in New Zealand (according to Boxing NZ published records and Boxrec) with her last loss against Cara Wharerau in May 2021.

Troy Garton - Lightweight

From Auckland New Zealand, this will be Troy Garton's second commonwealth games with Garton winning the Bronze Medalist at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Garton also comes from a great gym, with her fighting out of Mayhem boxing with Terry Reid-Batchelor as the head coach of the gym. The gym has produced a lot of greats as well including retired WBO World Light Heavyweight Champion Geovana Peres and another boxer who is going to the commonwealth games with her this year, Uila Mau'u.

Garton has two professional fights under her belt, remaining undefeated with two wins by decision. In her amateurs, she is a five-time New Zealand National Boxing Champion and in October 2020, Garton fought in her 50th amateur boxing bout.

Ariane Nicholson - Light Middleweight

From Tauranga, New Zealand, This will be Ariane Nicholson's first commonwealth games. Nicholson comes from a notable boxing gym in Tauranga where she fights out of TGA BOX Health & Fitness with Head Coach Chris Walker. This gym has produced a lot of great boxers who have mostly retired now including former WBO 10th Ranked Gunnar Jackson and the Taylor brothers, former New Zealand and WBU World champion Anthony Taylor and former New Zealand and IBO Oceania Champion Jonathan Taylor.

Nicholson has not had much success in her professional career with a record of one win two losses and 1 no contest. Her amateur career however is outstanding, especially with her fighting all across the world. She is a Three-time New Zealand National Amateur Champion, Gold Medalist at the 2019 Arafura Games Games and Multiple Golden Gloves Champion.

Here is the full list of boxers representing New Zealand at the 2022 commonwealth games.
