  New IFBA Champions crowned in Shenyang

(MAR 31) On March 30, a standing room only crowd at the Sunrise International Ballroom in Shenyang, along with viewers at home on KBS TV, witnessed the first Women's Championship Tripleheader in China with mixed emotions.In the first fight of the night, IFBA Flyweight Champion Maribel Zurita lost her title, when Referee Byungk Kim of South Korea, stopped the bout in the eighth round due to a head-butt. Seeking advice from the ringside physician, Referee Lee, quickly signaled the end of the bout when a cut in the corner of the eye by South Korean challenger Shin Hee Choi could not be stopped.  Full Story

(MAR 31) WBAN broke the news on March 18, that Christy "The Coal Miner's Daughter" Martin was finally going to face Lucia Rijker on July 9th, in Los Angeles, California. Rijker gained international attention after being featured as the "villain boxer" in the Oscar Winning movie "Million Dollar Baby".  Now, Rijker and Martin will have an opportunity to win up to a million dollars in their upcoming fight. Both will receive $250,000 to fight, and winner will walk away..Full Story

Following the first historic women's world title match, which was held in Shenyang, China in 2004, and promoted by Pyongwha Promotions, Maribel Zurita, Mariana Juarez and Kwangok Kim will put their titles on the line in yet another historic event for women's boxing.

(MAR 27) LAUGHLIN, NEVADA-Bloodied, battered and disappointed, Elena Reid suffered her first loss in several years.  Before more than 1,000 people at Harrah's Hotel and Casino, Reid was stopped by technical knockout by New York's Alicia Ashley in a bantamweight bout scheduled for eight. Referee Jay Nady stopped the fight because of a cut over Reid's right eye at 1:04 in the seventh.  Though Reid was the favorite coming into the fight, Ashley was the bigger, faster and more experienced fighter and showed it. (MAR 27) Last night in Kansas City, Missouri, Mary Elizabeth Ortega, 110,  stopped Stephanie Dobbs, 108,  in the second round by TKO.  Team Dobbs told WBAN, when we asked about them about this fight: "Unfortunately the fight was stopped prematurely in the second round. (MAR 22) Life imitates art even in the world of female prizefighting.  With the recent announcement that Lucia Rijker will be fighting Christy Martin for a $1 million prize to the winner, it opens the door for female professional boxers such as Elena “Baby Doll” Reid (16-1-5, 5 KOs) who fights on an all-women fight card Saturday in Laughlin, Nevada.

(MAR 18) On Saturday, April 30, 2005, at the Isle of Capri Casino, in Lula, Mississippi, in the main event, Midsouth Lt. Middleweight Champion Cristy Nickel, 7-1 (4 KO's), will be fighting Cassandra Lindsay, 1-2-0, a six-rounder that will be a rematch. This is the only female bout on the card. (MAR 7) On Saturday night, March 5, at the Isle of Capri, in Biloxi, Mississippi, multi-world champion Ann Wolfe, 168,  fought and "stopped" Genevia Buckhalter, 183, who had already previously been stopped by Wolfe in 2002.
